Selecting the Right Contractor for Your Project
Hiring a contractor to install, repair or replace concrete or masonry can be and exciting and fulfilling experience or a frustrating, expensive ordeal, depending on whether or not you choose a contractor who has the skill, knowledge and experience to do the work correctly. Here are a few tips to help you choose a contractor who can be relied upon.
- Make a list of area contractors and then do some research to learn more about each of them. For example, ensure that the contractor is experienced in the type of work required for your project. Ask them how long they have been in business and whether they have references from past customers. It is a good idea to check customer reviews of jobs that were performed 5 years ago or longer, as most concrete problems will not become apparent until several years have passed.
- Ask what type and amount of insurance protection they carry. It is important to choose a contractor with adequate insurance coverage so that you and your property are protected from any liability if an accident occurs on the worksite.
- Are materials and workmanship guaranteed or warranted? You’ll want to be confident that they will stand behind their work if there are any problems with the job.
- Sign a written contract. Have the contractor state clearly in writing exactly what work will be performed, as well as what materials will be used, the timeline for completion, the type and extent of warranty coverage, and the payment schedule
